ENVIROMEDIA - Game Design and Development - Art Direction
My first experience in the game industry, or in the computer generated art industry, was working for EnviroMedia, at the Manoa innovation center in Honolulu, Hawaii. The main title was Hydrous. Conceived by Leni Night. A game which taught the value and beauty of water, from conservation to chemistry, to mysticism..
With the help of some great people and painters, I was allowed to Conceptualize and Art Direct the look of the environments towards a highly epic look. I helped to design the game, the puzzles, and work on the 3D elements as well.
One way to conceptualize the work, was to layout backgrounds in sketch form for the painters, arranged so that the game flow was understandable. It served to define and visualize the changes, the terrain and the timing.
These terrain concept sketches were exported to painters who filled in the details.
Before the sketches were made, the layout of the game was designed in very iconic, very rough but very detailed overview drawings.
I fleshed out the concepts and helped design the game in this fashion, but it was nothing without the great painters who brought the world to life. (Nearly to life, the game was not finished and the company folded in 1996 after two years and one shipped title)
